If you build it, they will come
You can use WooCommerce, Shopify or any number of solutions to launch something, and the market is cluttered. The Internet is an endless space. It is, quite literally, endless. The more people create, the more there is. The more there is, the more distance there will be between you and the customer.
There are thousands of competitors in any eCommerce niche. Hence, without promotional campaigns and active marketing you may finish up with no sales and a failed business. It’s rare these days for a business to succeed using the “set and forget” business model.
Content marketing is waste of time
Many eCommerce owners believe that their work is done once their website is launched. But, you need fresh and qualitative content to help your search engine visibility. With a proper content marketing strategy you can not only increase your search rankings and generate sales but also enhance your brand visibility.
Competitors are local
There is some value in ring-fencing your business and limiting your exposure so you can manage the growth of the company. But if someone thinks your product is too expensive they can Google it, find a cheaper and perhaps a better version from a company abroad, order it, ship it for free and be using it by the weekend.
Don’t forget about the rest of the world. Not only are your competitors there but so are new customers and potentially huge opportunities to expand. Starting small is important but thinking globally is too.
You don’t have to deal with customers
This is completely untrue.
The only difference is that customers are not looking you in the eye and yelling at you when there is a problem, they are either yelling at you on the phone or through email (in all caps or using swear words!) or worst posting on social media what a bad experience they are having with your business. Customers are customers.
Customers will love our brand because we’re special
You’re not special.
Your company is more than likely one of many out there and you’ll need to use various tools to make your brand stand out. Make great products, provide amazing customer service, produce excellent content consistently and build a community around you.
No one has to love your brand. You don’t deserve anyone’s money. You earn it. The way I do that is by being attentive, and providing a great product that speaks for itself. Find your unique value proposition and sell it like no one has ever sold before.

If you are seen as trustworthy and reliable, your customers will thank you for it by purchasing your products.
