What’s best – WooCommerce or Shopify?


Shopify and WooCommerce are both great choices that serve different purposes and audiences. Although you can do a lot with Shopify you’re more limited than you are with WooCommerce. Each eCommerce platform has advantages for specific situations. If you value flexibility and ownership – WooCommerce is probably your best bet. If you value simplicity – Shopify is probably the one for you.

The Cost

Shopify is a subscription-based tool. The Basic, Professional, and Unlimited Shopify plans are priced at $29, $79, and $299 per month respectively. As you go for the higher plans, the commission charged per sale gets smaller. When you’ve got enough volume of sales, it makes more sense to go for the higher-tiered plans. With Shopify you don’t own the site and the cost of hosting and apps can get expensive over time.

An online store based on WooCommerce is more expensive initially. Website designers charge a premium for professional eCommerce site development. But once you get started, there is no recurring fee – beyond those you pay for hosting and maintenance of your website.

A Comparison

Both Shopify and WooCommerce are great options for creating an e-commerce site. WooCommerce is more flexible, but not as beginner-friendly. Shopify is the opposite – it’s very beginner-friendly, but has some limits that you won’t find with WooCommerce.

Shopify makes it very easy to start an eCommerce site. You sign up, choose your plan, set up the basics, and start selling. If you don’t have any practical experience in designing or developing a website and you don’t want to hire professionals for creating your online shop this is a good option for you.

WooCommerce is self-hosted and lets you have complete ownership of your site. Your store’s files are located on your own server and you’re free to modify everything on your store as you see fit. The trade-off of all that flexibility is that you’re the one who’s responsible for maintaining and securing your store. If you’re wanting a feature-rich eCommerce platform tailored specifically for your business then WooCommerce is a good option for you.

Shopify is hosted. That means Shopify hosts and manages the software for you and, while you do have a lot of flexibility, you’re limited to only making the changes that Shopify allows you to make.

If you want an online store that’s easy to deal with and you’re willing to pay whatever it costs, Shopify is a good choice. It’s simple, looks great, has excellent eCommerce features. It’s a good choice for just a store, but it’s not a good choice for a website or a blog that includes a store. It can be pricey, but the cost is clear and up front.

If you want to choose your own host, have more control over your site, and own your site, WooCommerce is better option. And, if you want blogging to be a big part of your site, then WordPress again is the clear winner.

There are a lot of things to consider when choosing an e-commerce platform: store management, inventory management, shopping cart systems, social networking, blogging, SEO, security, ease of use, expandability, and costs all play a big role in this decision.
